/ is a slash (also called “forward slash”)
\ is a backslash
I give a pass to non-commandline-junkies for not knowing this stuff. However, one of the IT guys at work has to be taught basic commands like “killall” and the difference between the slashes too. And they’re the ones running the network and mandating policy.
I’ve done that, in other situations. The job has to be done, so I start it. Someone has the time to stand around watching me - so I start screwing things up. It doesn’t take long before that someone decides he’d rather do the job, than to see me breaking things. ;^)
So I see some people are taking issue with the forward slash (/) vs backslash (\) thing. I actually find that the more I use the terminal, the more often I have to use the escape character, and getting that wrong can result in much worse things than getting a pathname wrong.

February 7, 2012 at 9:22 amIs he running Windows? Or are forward- and back-slashes reversed?
Also: It’s funny ‘cause it’s true.

February 7, 2012 at 11:38 amAnother way is to say “forward slash” instead of “slash”.

February 7, 2012 at 2:18 pmYay, someone else got in first on the slash-vs-backslash issue. It really bothers me when the Windows-brainwashed get it backwards…
